The Gold Standard for Medical Care
Led by medical directors, Leonard J.Cerullo, M.D. and John Hefferon, M.D., physicians at NOHC have been named among the best in Chicago. The 2006 Consumer's Checkbook Guide to Top Doctors survey of 19,000 Chicagoland physicians indicated that Dr. Cerullo is the neurosurgeon considered most desirable for care of a loved one. In that same survey, Dr. Hefferon was also frequently mentioned as an orthopedic surgeon physicians recommend.
Complementing the highly esteemed physician leadership, NOHC is home to the most experienced neurosurgical physician group in Chicagoland, the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN). In fact, CINN performs more surgeries to treat patients with spine and cranial conditions than any other medical practice in Illinois.
In addition to his reputation among physicians, Doctor Hefferon is the league physician for the National Basketball Association and the Women's National Basketball Association. He was also former team physician for the Chicago Bulls from 1984 to 1996 and the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996. He is joined at NOHC by a group of hand-selected, experienced orthopedic surgeons in the areas of sports medicine, joint replacement, hand injuries and degenerative conditions.
Orthopedic care & sports medicine
The orthopedic team at NOHC provides the full-range of orthopedic procedures, treating everything from sports and work-related injuries, to the pain caused by arthritis, to broken bones and sprains and strains. Novel therapies including cartilage repair and regeneration procedures, hip resurfacing and unicompartmental knee replacements are all performed here, using both conventional as well as minimally invasive approaches. Patients treated at NOHC range from professional and collegiate athletes, to weekend warriors, to those suffering from painful degenerative conditions.
NOHC offers a multidisciplinary approach to spine care, from diagnosis through treatment. Neurosurgeons, physiatrists, neurologists, clinical psychologists and physical therapists work collaboratively to relieve patient pain and restore function. Non-surgical and surgical subspecialty services include sports medicine, cervicogenic headaches, injection therapies, worker injury, disc arthoplasty, minimally-invasive procedures, and spinal oncology. During spine surgeries, professionals at NOHC use highly advanced technology to facilitate accuracy and positive results. This results in increased safety, less radiation exposure, and potentially shorter operations.
Stroke prevention and neurovascular care
NOHC’s comprehensive stroke prevention team is comprised of four renowned physicians who use the latest minimally-invasive technologies to treat blood vessels at risk of blockage or rupture, preventing the debilitating effects of stroke.
In early 2006 NOHC formed the Neurovascular and Stroke Prevention Program. NOHC has assembled a team that includes the most experienced neurosurgeon in the world in treating complex aneurysms using a minimally-invasive approach, the most experienced endovascular surgical neuroradiologist in the country performing clot retrieval procedures to treat ischemic stroke, as well as a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon in conventional cerebrovascular surgery. The team of interventionalistsis are complemented by leading-edge technology and experienced neurologists.
In 2006, neurosurgeons on staff at NOHC treated more brain tumors and other cranial disorders than any other neurosurgery group in Chicagoland.
A full range of modalities and surgical options for treatment of brain tumors are available at NOHC, including stereotactic radiosurgery with the GammaKnife®. The physicians at NOHC are among the most experienced in the country selecting and treating patients with the Gamma Knife, having performed over 3000 cases.
Many patients with painful symptoms stemming from neurologic and orthopedic conditions can find relief in an individualized, multifaceted regime of noninvasive therapy and preventive education.
The team of physiatrists, therapists, and clinicians at NOHC provide accurate pain diagnoses. Treatments include epidural, trigger point, and facet joint injections, as well as rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapies.
As new treatment options are developed in medical research, NOHC often participates in clinical trials. By staying involved in research, physicians at NOHC devise the best course of treatment, taking advantage of new options and opportunities as appropriate.
Due to the expertise and notoriety of the medical staff at NOHC, the physicians are often called upon to not only participate in but pioneer new clinical studies. Recently, NOHC was selected as one of a few sites in the country to evaluate a new embolic agent for the embolization of AVMs as well as evaluate the use of a novel clot retrieval device to treat ischemic stroke. When involved in national and global clinical studies, NOHC is often a top-enrolling site. For example, 80 patients were enrolled at NOHC in a recent lumbar artificial disc study.
