Hip Resurfacing: Improve Range of Motion, Restore Abduction

April 14, 2008 – 8:46 am

Birmingham Hip ResurfacingAs a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, I feel the need to continually study the results of my surgery as well as update my data base. So too must you as a potential patient progress in the understanding of knee and hip replacement surgery . As the surgeon, I may serve as the boss/CEO/conductor, you as a patient must have the knowledge which will empower you in the decision making process.

There is a revolution taking place in joint replacement surgery at the hospital level, the incision level, the physical therapy level and the prosthetic implant level. Over the next several weeks I week seek to update you on how at the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago, we are turning our knowledge into the power that will provide the best possible outcome and longevity for all hip and knee replacement in 2008.

In the Spring of 2007, the Chicago Tribune featured Hip Resurfacing at NOHC as a means of “ Reshaping and resurfacing the femur” to “provide a welcome alternative to hip surgery”. At the time I undertook the surgery for Dr. M.W., a 46 year old mature athlete who wanted to return to regularly playing basketball, golf and tennis. We at the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago had successfully completed 80 hip resurfacings at that time. By year end it was over 200. In reviewing the results of hip resurfacing at NOHC in preparation for national and international scientific presentations in early 2008, I documented that Total Hip Resurfacing can improve range of motion and restore abduction, adduction and external rotation to normal levels. The procedure made possible in Chicago at NOHC is the fastest growing orthopedic procedure world wide and based on our research, we strongly recommend hip resurfacing to those patients who intend to pursue athletics or other vigorous physical activities.

The Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital Blog was created to provide insightful brain, back, and joint information to people that struggle to find the right path in the maze of healthcare-related decisions they face today. The power of the internet is transforming health information and empowering people to take a front seat in managing their own health; correspondingly it has inspired Doctors Leonard Cerullo and Mitchell Sheinkop to share NOHC's cutting-edge resources with the online community.

Our interactive team will be posting periodic updates to the Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago Blog.

We hope that you will take a few seconds to subscribe to our future postings and look forward to providing you with valuable healthcare information for a successful treatment outcome and a speedy recovery.

  2. I had my left hip resurfaced on October 10th, 2007 by Dr. James Grace in Green Bay WI at the age of 53. Had it done on a Wed. and left the hospital on Friday….with a cane and comments from physical therapy personnel on how “they love” mobile people. Had some help from hubby to get in and out of the “Princess” height bed for 4-5 days….walked without the cane in the house after 2 weeks….still used it for another week outside (snow/ice) and drove my car on day 12 to visit new grand-baby at the hospital. Went down hill snow skiing 3 months post op…I think this surgery was a total fit for me to regain what I wanted to still do physically but could no longer do because of my arthritic hip. Went skydiving 3 weeks before surgery to fulfill a life long dream. Figured I could do this “best” before knowing I was going to get a new one soon. I know that I will be able to go skydiving again. Life is good. Sincerely, Diane McKinnon
