Fast Facts
Description—The Neurological & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago is the country's first freestanding acute-care specialty hospital dedicated exclusively to neuroscience and orthopedic services. It utilizes breakthrough technology and minimally invasive techniques as well as advanced procedures for neurosurgery, orthopedics, pain management, neuro-oncology, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.
NOHC opened on Jan. 1, 2003 as a partnership between NeuroSource®, the nation's only healthcare company focused exclusively on the business of neuro and orthopedic sciences, and affiliated physicians. Currently 170 physicians are on staff and more have admitting privileges.
Leadership—Led by Leonard J. Cerullo, M.D., and John Hefferon, M.D., Institute physicians are well known and highly respected in their field. Both peers and patients frequently cite them in "best of" lists. Dr. Cerullo and Dr. Hefferon hold academic appointments at Rush University and Northwestern University, respectively. In addition, Dr. Hefferon is the chief physician for the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Focus—NOHC is known for clinical focus and choice in care. Patients receive integrated care from specialty-trained clinicians and other staff specialists. They move seamlessly from diagnostic testing to evaluation to treatment, in one building, and often in one day. And all of the treatment is delivered by a dedicated neurological and/or orthopedic team.
Technology—NOHC has the latest imaging technology available. It offers the most advanced diagnostics and treatment technology including the newest Gamma Knife ® , and dedicated Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system, and Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. Plans are underway to purchase additional stereotactic radiosurgery equipment. Since NOHC houses all of the latest equipment, doctors are free to recommend care that is optimal for the patient-not limited by technology or physician expertise.
Facilities—NOHC has 10 operating suites, 24 outpatient exam rooms and is licensed for 78 beds in the following categories: 18 ICU beds, 45 medical/surgical beds, and 15 rehab beds.
Location—NOHC is located on Chicago's north side in the Ravenswood community (near Wilson and Damen Avenues) at 4501 North Winchester Avenue, with easy access from both Lake Shore Drive and the Kennedy (I-90/94) Expressway.
