Two New Hip Resurfacing Options Available at NOHC

Birmingham hip resurfacing System

The bone-conserving approach of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System preserves more of the patient's natural bone structures and stability and reduces the post-operative risks of hip dislocation and inaccurate leg length. "This is one of the most exciting procedures I've seen in years," explains Dr. Sheinkop. "I see hip resurfacing as the ideal solution for many young, active patients who suffer from hip pain. As patients are getting younger and younger, and are staying physically active much later in life, I've needed an alternative to total hip replacement that accommodates their age and lifestyle. Hip resurfacing is that alternative. In addition, preserving the top of the femur is also an advantage if the hip requires subsequent work. It's important for patients to know that the parts involved in any hip implant procedure will eventually wear out and if you are getting a hip resurfacing at age 52, it is likely that by the time the patient turns 75, you may need another procedure. Resurfacing the hip allows surgeons the ability to perform a subsequent hip replacement procedure with a less-invasive approach than that necessary to revise a total hip replacement. It is closer to a primary hip."

"Hip resurfacing is best compared to the dentist who removes the cavity and caps the tooth," said Sheinkop. "Replacement would be not unlike removing the tooth and implanting a prosthesis."

Investigational Biomet Recap® Total Hip Resurfacing System

NOHC is the only site in Illinois and one of only two sites in the Midwest selected to conduct a clinical study testing the safety and effectiveness of a new investigational hip resurfacing device called the ReCap® Total Hip Resurfacing System, designed by Biomet, Inc. of Warsaw, Ind. Appropriate patients for the ReCap clinical trial should be under age 65 and require hip surgery after conservative efforts to manage the pain have failed and meet the pre-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria defined in the FDA approved protocol.
